MARKET STREET

San Francisco is one of the few “world class cities” without a truly grand boulevard. The cities of Chicago, New York and Paris all have major streets that wind through their cities like beautiful ribbons, offering up great shopping, walking and eating. Not only do these areas attract tourists, they also bring jobs to local residents, affordable housing options and a unique artistic and cultural option for both residents and visitors.

In San Francisco we have Market Street which sadly has been neglected at its heart: Mid-Market. Market Street shines with shopping, hotels and boutiques from Fifth Street to the Ferry Building and North of the Civic Center and the Castro which spills over onto Market with vibrant restaurants and shops.

However, the area along Market Street and Mission between 5th Street and 10th Street is currently worn down, unclean and unsafe which detracts people from visiting the area. Luckily, new plans are in the making to create a grand boulevard on Mid-Market. After 10 years of community planning in conjunction with the Mid-Market community including the Mid-Market Project Area Committee, it is time to move forward with plans for the Mid-Market area of the City.

For far too long, the current D6 Supervisor has played on residents’ fears to block any kind of positive progress along Mid-Market. Instead of attracting new and affordable housing options and jobs that will use local hiring, the incumbent continues to stall any and all development in the area. During his six year tenure, he has only used the Mid-Market plan for his personal benefit, not the benefits of his constituents that are in need of job training, local jobs, cultural activity and affordable housing.

There is a better solution for the Mid-Market area which will benefit the residents of District 6. We can be sensitive to the needs of non-profit providers and area residents while still bringing much needed improvements to the area. Let’s work together to create a Mid-Market area that is attractive, safe, clean and desirable.
